Ammonium sulfate is virtually non-volatile as long as we are referring to non-calcareous soils. Accordingly, ammonium sulfate is recommended over urea or urea-containing products (such as urea ammonium nitrate solutions) whenever broadcast applications are not followed by incorporation, such as the case you describe. This is especially true in the case of coarse and low organic matter soils (low cation exchange capacity).
